Bohemian FC is delighted to confirm that defender Cian Byrne has signed a new contract until the end of the 2027 season.
The centre-back, having come through at our partner club St Kevin’s Boys from the age of 12, impressed for our League of Ireland academy teams from the age of 14 all the way through to U19 level.
He made his senior competitive debut in the FAI Cup against Lucan United in the summer of 2022, making his league debut against Sligo Rovers on the final day of that season.
Still just 22 years of age, Byrne has made 55 first-team appearances with Bohs since, as well 38 appearances across successful loan spells with Longford Town in 2023 and Galway United in the first half of last season.
Manager Alan Reynolds said: “Cian has been here since he was a boy. We know how much pulling on a Bohs jersey means to him and I think our fans see that in him too.
“Cian is still only 22, but he has brilliant leadership qualities and we are delighted with his development as a player over the past 18 months.
“He embraced going out on loan to Galway for the first half of the season and came back even better, and finished the season really strongly for us.
“Everything Cian has he has had to fight for and that is a really important trait to have as a footballer and we can see that he is getting better all the time. He captained underage teams here for a reason.
“We have lost some great servants to this club in the past few weeks with Keith Buckley, Rob Cornwall and James Talbot moving on.
“Cian is still a really young player and still developing, but for me he has the attributes to push on now and be among the next generation’s group of leaders at this club, so we are delighted he has committed his future here.”
Byrne said: “I’m buzzing. This year was an important season for me. I had a good time down in Galway, I really enjoyed my football. Learning from a different manager and adapting to a different style of play added a string to my bow.
“But Bohs is my home. This is where I wanted to come back to and play my football. When I came back in, I played a lot of games towards the end of the season. So I’m delighted to sign, and can’t wait to get ready for next season already.
“The ambition of this club is attractive for any footballer. This has been my home since U14s, and hopefully we can kick on again. The ambition was to get Europe but obviously a club of Bohs’ size, we want to be driving for trophies. We will be working hard every day trying to do that.”
