€1 a day to have your say - 2012 membership on sale now E-mail

@bfcdublin Become a Bohemian! 2012 membership is now on sale. The Bohemian Football Club has been a members' club since it was founded in September 1890 in the North Circular Road gate lodge of the Phoenix Park.

It is the oldest association football club in the Republic of Ireland, a key founder member of the Football Association of Ireland, and the only club to have played in each and every League of Ireland season since the championship began in 1921.

The first members of Bohemians were almost all players, in fact our players were all members (at the very least ‘playing associates’) until the club altered its constitution to cater for its first non-amateurs in 1969.

A full member becomes, in effect, a shareholder of the Bohemian Football Club Limited with equal standing to any other member, with the right to attend and vote at all general meetings.

The Annual Report on the club’s affairs, including financial statements, is sent out to members each year, along with the notice for the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The Bohemian Football Club’s management committee (board) is elected at the AGM (held usually in March or April), when the members also vote to set the membership subscription.

Any member who has served three years may put him or herself up for election to the committee, or after five years in the case of the presidency. All positions on the committee/board are totally honorary.

The history of Bohemians is closely entwined with that of Dalymount Park, the nation’s premier soccer stadium up until the 1990s. John Giles, Liam Brady, Pele, George Best, the Charltons, Beckenbauer, Van Basten, Gullit, Zidane… they’ve all played at your club’s ground, Dalymount Park.

That the Bohemian club has survived for 121 years is largely due to its members - and the club’s continued survival will undoubtedly be down to them too.

Through thick and thin, the ‘Gypsies’ have remained loyal to their membership structure.

In recent years others have trumpeted their own rebirth as a members’ club – almost as if they’d pioneered the concept – ironic perhaps, but also confirmation that Bohemians got it right from day one… on 6th September 1890.

It isn’t always easy for a members’ club – and it certainly hasn’t been for us of late – but by staying true and confident in its founding principles the Bohemian Football Club lives on, owned, run, and cherished by its ever faithful supporters: the members.
